Every since I was a child, tea has played a major role in my life. My mother was a major fan of all things herbal and had done a lot of research on the different medicinal plants and the remedies they provided.
The challenge with these plants is keeping them in an “activated” form until they are needed. Drying herbs it one of the best way to lock in most of their powerful ingredients without loosing their vitality.
However, when you go to enjoy these benefits there really are only two good methods for extracting them: steeping in alcohol, or boiling water.
While we did use the first method to prepare some of the tinctures, a lot of the time we just enjoyed the herbs as a tea which we drank to specifically address whatever ailment we were feeling.
Chamomile tea for sleep is one of the oldest remedies that has ever been employed, and it is still a highly effective one. On nights when I am too agitated, I find that drinking a cup of chamomile tea is an excellent way to induce drowsiness.
Additionally, it is beginning to be understood that chamomile tea reduce the amount of sugar that the liver produces, which may one day be used to help Type 2 diabetics control their sugar levels. This reduction in energy output by the liver may also be what helps slow the metabolism and induce sleep.
Ginger tea was another fun tea that we often enjoyed in our house. One of the major benefits with ginger tea is that is very soothing to an upset stomach. I will say that its tangy taste did take a little bit to get used to, but its rapid response to any stomach discomfort still has me sold on its benefits.
A lot of people sneer at the idea of using herbs to create better health. However, I can say from experience that they are quite inexpensive and highly effective when compared to a lot of the more dangerous remedies on the market.
So try a cup of tea! You might be pleasantly surprised.
