Problems of Drug Dependency

Drug dependency is one of the major issues that today’s society is struggling with. Although the issues surrounding drug dependency have been around for many years, no one has been able to tackle the problem head on. Probably one of the reasons why that is, is because there are still a lot of drug pushers and sources that keep on selling these illegal substances. Yes, some of these substances can have good or positive effects but drug dependency that is due to abuse or addiction produces more undesirable effects.

In general, drug dependency is not completely negative since a lot of people are dependent on drugs but do not abuse them or get addicted. By that we mean that there are some people that require drugs in order to remain healthy. People with different conditions that need a maintenance drug are those that are dependent but not addicted. As for the negative side of drug dependency, these are actually the people that have issues with control.

The problems of drug dependency are that person loses their ability to think rationally due to drug abuse and addiction. They rely on drugs in order to get through each day and losing their daily dose can lead to some irrational behaviour that can be potentially harmful to others.

In order to further analyze what problems we have regarding drug dependency, here are some of the common but serious examples:

  • Loss of rational thinking

A person that has a drug dependency issue usually does not have the ability to think straight. They lose the ability to rationalize since they are so filled with urge to “shoot up” or “get high” on a particular substance. They neglect the consequences of their actions because all they can think about is the drug.

For those that have gone over the edge, it is drug dependency that can actually push a person to do undesirable things. This brings us to our second common problem which is erratic behaviour.

  • Erratic behaviour

People that suffer from issues with drug dependency have been known to have unpredictable behaviour. Since they have lost the ability to think clearly, they do not consider what the result of their actions will be. They are only concerned about one thing, which is procuring their drug.

In some cases murders, robberies and other criminal acts are known to have been committed under the influence of an illegal substance.

  • Malnourishment

Issues with drug dependency are also characterized by disturbed eating patterns. Most drug abusers will forget or neglect to eat. This can then lead to poor nutrition which gives addicts their characteristic “skeletal” appearance since they barely consume anything aside from drugs.

Drugs can suppress their appetite for days or more so they usually become very thin and often pale with sunken eyes and prominent cheek bones.

  • Retarded thinking

People that have problems with drug dependency are slow to think. They cannot process ideas as quickly as most normal people can. This is due to the fact that these drugs have a depressing effect on the brain.
